Devotional on the Feast of Booths (Sukkot) This year I hit the big 6-0! The older I get, the more aware I am that my time on this planet is as James put it, “A mist!” I am grateful for the blessings of faith, family, friends, and the privilege of serving God in the church. I am more grateful for the promise that beyond this temporary structure that I call my body because of Jesus I look forward to the Resurrection when I will recover a body that doesn’t fade or wrinkle! “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”2 Corinthians 4:16 NIV A powerful picture God instituted for the people of Israel was called the Feast of Booths, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles. It was to be a reminder of the time Israel spent in the desert prior to entering the Promised Land. Moses’ greatest fear for Israel was adversity. It was prosperity. In Deuteronomy 6 he warns them,“When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.” Deuteronomy 6:10-13 NIV My prayer for you as you spend some time in God’s Word this week is that you will anchor your heart in the reality that the Promised Land isn’t a place. It is a PERSON! God’s Command to Dwell in Booths Scripture Reading: Leviticus 23:39–43 "On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the LORD seven days… You shall dwell in booths for seven days… that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God." The Feast of Booths, also called the Feast of Tabernacles or Sukkot, was one of Israel’s most joyful celebrations. After the harvest was gathered, the people built temporary shelters out of branches and lived in them for seven days. These booths were not luxurious or permanent; they were fragile, reminding Israel of the time their ancestors wandered in the wilderness, fully dependent on God’s provision. God commanded this annual feast so His people would never forget: - He rescued them from slavery in Egypt. - He provided for them in the wilderness. - He was their shelter, even when they had none. Living in these booths was an act of humility and remembrance. Just as the Israelites’ fragile shelters pointed back to God’s faithfulness in the desert, so too do our fragile lives point to His sustaining presence today. Reflection: What “booths” in your life remind you that you are dependent on God? How can you intentionally remember His provision? Prayer: Lord, help me embrace the truth that I am not self-sufficient. My life is a temporary dwelling, but You are my eternal shelter. God’s Provision in the Wilderness Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2–4 "And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness… that He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD." The Feast of Booths was also tied to the harvest season. It celebrated God’s abundant provision of crops and food in the land He had given them. But it wasn’t just about physical harvest—it was about spiritual nourishment. In the wilderness, Israel learned that God provides more than bread; He provides Himself. During the feast, the people would wave palm, myrtle, willow, and citron branches before the Lord as symbols of joy and thanksgiving. Their worship declared: “Everything we have comes from Your hand.” This feast reminds us that God still provides in our wilderness seasons. Whether it’s manna in the desert, daily bread on our table, or strength for the trials we face, He sustains His people. Reflection: Where has God provided for you recently—physically, emotionally, or spiritually? How can you express joy and gratitude like Israel during Sukkot? Prayer: Father, thank You for being my provider. Even when resources seem scarce, help me trust that You will sustain me in every wilderness I face. God’s Dwelling Among His People Scripture Reading: John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." The Feast of Booths not only looked back to the wilderness but also looked forward to something greater: God Himself dwelling with His people. When John wrote that Jesus “dwelt” among us, the Greek word literally means “tabernacled” or “pitched His tent.” In other words, Jesus is the true fulfillment of the Feast of Booths. He is God’s presence among us—not in a fragile shelter but in the flesh, bringing eternal life. And just as Israel celebrated with joy during Sukkot, so we rejoice in Christ, who promises that one day God’s dwelling will be with us forever. Revelation 21:3 says: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people.” The temporary booths pointed to an eternal truth: God will one day remove all fragility, all wandering, and all sorrow, and He will be our shelter forever. Reflection: How does knowing that Jesus “tabernacled” among us change the way you see His presence in your life today? How can you live with eternal joy and gratitude, like the Israelites during the Feast? Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being God with us. Thank You that You entered our fragile world to give us eternal life. I look forward to the day when You will dwell with us forever in glory.
